OMAHA, NE
What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?
I can remember my top 5 no problem.
OMAHA NEBRASKA ON DECEMBER 31, 2017
The rest do not matter, that’s how cold it was in Omaha that night.
It was NINETEEN DEGREES BELOW ZERO without the windchill. The previous record low was recorded in 1884. That means this was the coldest night in Omaha in 133 years.
AND I WENT FOR A WALK.
Wikipedia’s calling it the 2017/2018 American Cold Wave, but I don’t remember it having a title at the time. We just called it the coldest night ever. It was caused by a polar vortex, which is basically a huge wave of freezing air, rotating and moving south from Canada. We actually had another one in CR the very next year, but it was unprecedented for me at the time.
The image above was taken the following day, Jan. 1, 2018. The original image was nice but this color splash edit - leaving only the red and making everything else monochrome - turned it into one of my favorite images ever. It makes for a great print, shoot me an email if you want one!
